Relative numbers

  1. Exercise: Calculate (−7) + (+3). — Answer: −4. Explanation: different signs → subtract the absolute values (7 − 3 = 4) and keep the sign of the larger, which is negative.
  2. Exercise: Calculate (−4) × (−5). — Answer: 20. Explanation: the product of two negatives is positive.
  3. Exercise: Calculate 6 − (−2). — Answer: 8. Explanation: subtracting a negative is adding its opposite: 6 + 2.

Fractions

  1. Exercise: Compute 1/2 + 1/3. — Answer: 5/6. Explanation: common denominator 6: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
  2. Exercise: Compute 3/4 × 2/5. — Answer: 6/20 = 3/10. Explanation: multiply numerators and denominators, then simplify by 2.
  3. Exercise: Compute 2/3 ÷ 4/9. — Answer: 3/2. Explanation: multiply by the reciprocal: 2/3 × 9/4 = 18/12 = 3/2.

Simple equations

  1. Exercise: Solve 2x + 5 = 15. — Answer: x = 5. Explanation: subtract 5 from both sides (2x = 10), then divide by 2.
  2. Exercise: Solve 3x − 4 = 11. — Answer: x = 5. Explanation: 3x = 15, so x = 5. Check: 3(5) − 4 = 11 ✓.
  3. Exercise: A number plus its double equals 21. Find it. — Answer: 7. Explanation: x + 2x = 21 → 3x = 21 → x = 7.

Proportionality and percentages

  1. Exercise: 5 notebooks cost $10. How much do 8 cost? — Answer: $16. Explanation: one notebook costs $2; 8 × 2 = 16.
  2. Exercise: What is 15% of 200? — Answer: 30. Explanation: 15/100 × 200 = 30.

Angles and area

  1. Exercise: Two angles of a triangle measure 50° and 60°. Find the third. — Answer: 70°. Explanation: the angles of a triangle add up to 180°: 180 − 50 − 60 = 70.
  2. Exercise: Two parallel lines are cut by a transversal; one angle measures 43°. What is the co-interior (same-side interior) angle? — Answer: 137°. Explanation: co-interior angles are supplementary: 180 − 43 = 137.
  3. Exercise: Find the area of a rectangle 7 cm by 4 cm. — Answer: 28 cm². Explanation: A = length × width; give the unit squared.
