Grade 8 Mathematics Study Guide – Lebanese Curriculum

Published 22 September 2026 · by EduRise

Grade 8 is the bridge between the concrete mathematics of Grade 7 and the exam-style exercises of Grade 9. Students who leave Grade 8 comfortable with powers, algebraic calculation and linear equations find the Brevet year far easier. This guide covers the main chapters of the Lebanese Grade 8 programme and how to revise them.

Powers and square roots

Powers with positive and negative integer exponents, the product, quotient and power-of-a-power rules, scientific notation, and square roots of perfect squares. Typical trap: (−2)⁴ versus −2⁴. Drill 10 quick items a day for a week.

Algebraic calculation

Reducing expressions, expanding with the distributive property and simple double brackets, and first factorisations with a common factor. This chapter is used everywhere afterwards, so aim for speed and accuracy.

Linear equations and inequalities

Solving ax + b = cx + d, equations with brackets and fractions, and simple inequalities on the number line. Word problems: define the unknown, translate, solve, check.

Proportionality and percentages

Proportional tables, the cross product, percentage increase and decrease, scales and speed. These questions look easy but are frequent in exams; the usual error is applying a percentage to the wrong base.

The Pythagorean theorem

Computing a side of a right triangle, using the converse to prove a triangle is right-angled, and applications to rectangles, squares and cones. Always state the theorem, then substitute, then simplify the root.

Geometry: triangles, remarkable lines and transformations

Angle properties, the remarkable lines of a triangle (medians, bisectors, altitudes, perpendicular bisectors), the triangle inequality, and translations and symmetries. Draw accurately; many questions depend on a correct figure.

Statistics

Frequency, relative frequency, mean and range from tables and bar charts. Learn to compute the mean from a frequency table — it is a common short exercise.

Revision plan

  1. One chapter per week in the school order: lesson, practice set, chapter exam.
  2. Redo every wrong question three days later.
  3. Keep a formula page (power rules, identities, Pythagoras, percentage formulas).
  4. In the last month, do mixed exams from all chapters.
