Grade 8 science builds the foundations that Grade 9 and the Brevet assume: the human body systems in Biology, circuits and forces in Physics, and atoms and reactions in Chemistry. Students who understand these chapters, rather than memorise them, arrive in Grade 9 with a real advantage.
Biology: the human body and reproduction
Grade 8 Biology typically covers the skeleton and muscles, the nervous system, nutrition and digestion, the respiratory and circulatory systems, and human reproduction and development. Learn each system as a sequence (organ → role → what happens if it fails) and draw the diagrams yourself.
Physics: electricity, light, pressure and forces
Simple circuits (series and parallel), current and voltage measurements, conductors and insulators, light propagation, reflection and shadows, pressure in solids and liquids, and forces and weight. Practise drawing circuits with the correct symbols and predicting which lamps light up.
Chemistry: matter, atoms and reactions
States of matter and changes of state, mixtures and solutions (dissolving, concentration, separation), atoms, molecules and chemical formulas, and simple chemical reactions (combustion, reactions with oxygen) with word and symbol equations. Learn the difference between a physical change and a chemical reaction with examples.
Common mistakes
- Confusing current (A) and voltage (V) in a circuit.
- Writing a chemical formula with the wrong subscript (H2O, CO2, O2).
- Mixing up arteries and veins, or inhalation and exhalation.
- Learning a diagram without being able to explain what each part does.
Weekly routine
- One chapter per science: lesson (with figures), practice questions with explanations, chapter exam.
- One summary sheet per chapter: diagram + 5 key sentences.
- Flashcards for vocabulary and formulas every Friday.
- Retake the exam of any chapter under 80% two weeks later.
